West Stafford School Reading/Literacy Department

Greetings from our literacy team, comprised of reading teacher Mary Ellen Vigeant, our literacy paraprofessionals, Karen Kelly and Kathryn Lyman, and our library paraprofessional, Donna Possardt-Joyal.

Working through both individual and small-group instruction, our reading team is committed to improving every aspect of your child’s reading.

Our ultimate goal is to help every West Stafford student grow a genuine love of reading and become a life-long reader.  We feel fortunate that our reading department not only works with children within their classrooms, but we also provide interventions where children come to the reading room.  Here they may gain additional Fundations practice or attend a group using Leveled Literacy Intervention texts and strategies.  Also, first graders may receive TLC (Teaching for Literacy Competency), Modified Reading Recovery, or if they need to build fluency or work on comprehension, they might receive an intervention called Read Naturally.

Beyond these targeted interventions, we are proud to promote literacy school-wide, encouraging involvement in The Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge, promoting a trip to the town library for first-graders along with their step-up day, creating a Reading At Home incentive program, celebrating a week of Dr. Seuss-themed activities during Read Across America, participating in Jumpstart: Read for the Record and Drop Everything and Read Day, as well as our  “Dress as Your Favorite Book Character” day.  Finally, we operate our student-run bookstore.

I am always happy to answer any questions families might have about our literacy program.  You can contact me at [email protected].
